The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) will no longer accept paper tickets on Regional Rail trains or at turnstiles at Center City rail stations on April 2. Instead, the SEPTA Key Card Travel Wallet will be available for regional rail service.

SEPTA announced in October that it would begin to phase out the use of paper tickets with the launch of the key card for regional rail in July 2020. SEPTA Key enhances health and safety protections in place for customers and employees by reducing the need for in-person transactions, authority officials said in a news release.

With SEPTA Key, riders can:

  • pay as they go with Travel Wallet;
  • load a weekly (56 rides) or monthly (240 rides) TrailPass;
  • load a one day Independence Pass (10 rides); and
  • load a three day Independence Pass, which bundles three one-day Independence passes at a discounted rate.

Riders with paper tickets can return them for a refund.
