The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority's (SEPTA) King of Prussia Rail project has been admitted to the project development phase under the Federal Transit Administration's (FTA) Capital Investment Grant (CIG) program, the agency announced this week.
The CIG program appropriates funds for projects involving light-, heavy- and commuter-rail systems, streetcars, buses and rapid transit lines. The FTA's New Starts program provides approximately $2.3 billion per year in federal funding to transit projects across the United States, including extensions to existing systems such as SEPTA's Norristown High Speed Line.
The King of Prussia Rail project calls for extending the existing Norristown High Speed Line 4 miles into King of Prussia. The extension will provide workers, shoppers, students and visitors convenient and reliable access between Center City, University City and King of Prussia — the region's three largest employment centers — in 45 minutes, authority officials said in a news release.
The project is a component of SEPTA Forward, the authority's strategic plans that focuses on increased connectivity, access and equity. Together with other SEPTA Forward initiatives — such as a trolley modernization — the aim is to promote and strengthen regional growth, and connect people with opportunities, SEPTA officials said in a press release.
