The San Francisco area’s Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) recently released its 2010 draft public participation plan and is seeking residents’ feedback on the document, which summarizes the commission’s practices for getting local communities involved in the transportation planning process.

The draft plan calls for frequent consultations with advisory panels; mail and email notifications of upcoming meetings, workshops and other forums; online archived meetings; agency staff dedicated to public outreach and assistance; and translation services.

A nine-county bay area transportation planning agency, MTC also included an appendix to the plan on public participation for developing a sustainable communities strategy (SCS) and regional transportation plan. An “extensive outreach effort” is expected as part of the process of developing the SCS, MTC officials said in a prepared statement.

The commission is accepting public comments on the draft public participation plan until Aug. 23.
