The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) recently completed acquisition of a Stockton Street property for the Central Subway’s Chinatown Station.

Along the property, the agency plans to unveil a decorative vinyl wrap depicting student artwork and a Chinese mural provided by the Chinese Historical Society of America, SFMTA officials said in a prepared statement.

"This progress for the Chinatown Station is a visible sign that the Central Subway is moving from the drawing board to reality," said Board of Supervisors President David Chiu, who recently sponsored legislation that allows construction of the station to proceed. "The Central Subway will help San Francisco fulfill its promise of being a Transit First city by providing a much-needed light rail connection between established neighborhoods like Chinatown and new ones like Mission Bay."

The Central Subway Project will extend the T Third Line from the 4th Street Caltrain Station to Chinatown, providing a direct, rapid transit link from the Bayshore and Mission Bay areas to SoMa and downtown, SFMTA officials said. Four new stations will be built along the 1.7-mile Central Subway alignment: an above-ground station at Fourth and Brannan streets, and three underground stations at Moscone Center, Union Square and Chinatown.

Meanwhile, SFMTA plans to host several public meetings during March to discuss the agency’s upcoming two-year budget. The meetings are intended to provide residents an opportunity to learn what is being proposed in the budget and to discuss specific programs and projects, agency officials said in a prepared statement.

Also open for discussion during the meetings is the agency’s long-standing structural operating and capital budget deficits, as well as their impact on services. The first meeting will be held March 3.
