SFMTA closes entrance to make way for Central Subway tunnel, station construction

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) yesterday closed the entrance to the Powell Street Muni Metro/BART Station at Stockton and Ellis streets to facilitate construction of the Central Subway tunnel and Union Square/Market Street Station. The entrance will be closed for the next five years.

When the subway project is completed, the entrance — also known as the Apple Store entrance — will provide convenient access to the T Third Line at the future Union Square/Market Street Station, SFMTA officials said in a press release.

An underground concourse connection will link the Union Square and Powell Street stations, enabling riders to transfer more easily between the T Third Line and Bay Area Rapid Transit and Muni Metro lines operating in the Market Street tunnel, they said.

The Central Subway project involves the construction of a light-rail line designed to improve public transportation in San Francisco. Construction of the tunnel and stations will start this year and continue through 2017.
