This week, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) plans to begin a year-long escalator maintenance program at three locations: Church Street Station, Hallidie Plaza at Powell Station and Van Ness Station.

The first phase of the Muni Metro Subway Escalator Rehabilitation project calls for renovating five escalators at the three subway stations, SFMTA officials said in a prepared statement.

The cost of the initial phase is $7.38 million, which will be funded by Proposition K local sales tax revenue and federal funds.

Work will begin this month at Church Station, followed by Hallidie Plaza and Van Ness. Upgrade work on each escalator is expected to take about three months.
