San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) and local officials earlier this week announced the receipt of $20 million in federal funds for the second phase of the Third Street Light Rail Project, also known as the Central Subway.

SFMTA officials also announced the agency plans to send the final submittal for a New Starts Full Funding Grant Agreement to the Federal Transit Administration by Sept. 19.

Including the $20 million, the Central Subway now has received $92.4 million in New Starts funding to date, SFMTA officials said in a prepared statement. The project’s total cost is projected to total $1.57 billion, with the federal government contributing $1 billion.

“The momentum continues to build for San Francisco’s Central Subway project because it will expand transit options in the heart of the city,” said SFMTA Vice Chairman Jerry Lee.
