Yesterday, San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority (SFMTA) officials announced that the initial “notice to proceed” (NTP) authorization for the Central Subway’s largest construction contract, at $233.5 million, will be issued this week.

SFTMA plans to move forward with the first of three NTP authorizations for the tunneling contract, which was awarded in June to Barnard Impregilo Healy. The NTP will enable the contractor to order two tunnel boring machines needed to construct the twin bore tunnels for the underground portion of the subway project.

The contract will include three NTP authorizations: one for $35 million, authorizing the procurement of the tunnel boring machines; one for $36 million, authorizing construction of the tunnel launch box and contractors work area; and one for $163 million, authorizing the start of tunneling work, which includes construction of 8,240-foot-long, precast concrete segmental lined twin–bored guideway tunnels, five emergency cross passages between bored tunnels and station end walls.
