The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) earlier this week announced it will rebuild and expand its Potrero Yard streetcar and trolley bus maintenance facility.

The Potrero Yard is the first site scheduled for improvement under SFMTA’s Building Progress Program, which calls for upgrading all of the agency’s aging facilities, SFMTA officials said in a press release.

The two-story Potrero Yard will be rebuilt into a three-story maintenance and storage garage, equipped to service SFMTA’s growing fleet of battery electric buses. The facility will also serve as a centralized Muni operator training location.

Construction of the approximately $400 million facility will begin in 2023, with expected completion in 2026. SFMTA is currently in the planning phase, and will move onto the design phase in 2021, according to the project website.

Potrero Yard was built in 1915 and is one of the agency’s oldest facilities, agency officials said.
