The Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) system this month reached its first anniversary of service.

The 43-mile system runs from Santa Rosa to downtown San Rafael, California. Since it opened in August 2017, SMART has served nearly 700,000 passengers, officials from the railroad said in a press release.

"In just one year of service, SMART has been fortunate to have a strong and loyal following," said Judy Arnold, SMART's vice chairwoman.

In April, SMART received a $22.5 million federal grant to build a 2.1-mile extension from downtown San Rafael to the Golden Gate Transit Larkspur Ferry terminal in Marin County, California.

The full system is slated to run 70 miles along the Sonoma-Marin corridor.
