The Sacramento Regional Transit District’s (SacRT) 20 new S700 low-floor light-rail trains began serving the Gold and Green lines this week, a milestone in the California transit agency’s modernization and accessibility efforts.

For the first few weeks of operation, several of the old high-floor trains will run on the lines while final testing is completed, agency officials said in a press release.

The new trains feature low-floor entry and enable riders traveling with bicycles to store them onboard. Tactile door indicator tiles have been installed in the car closest to the station platform for those with visual impairment.

SacRT contracted Siemens Mobility to produce 76 new S700 trains total. The district has received enough funding from a number of grants to purchase 45 low-floor light-rail trains so far. Eight more trains are expected to be delivered in late 2025, and production will begin on 17 more in 2025, SacRT officials said.

Construction on Blue Line station platforms to meet the lower height requirements for the low-floor trains will begin in late 2024; construction is expected to be completed by 2027.
