The Sacramento Regional Transit District's (SacRT) new low-floor trains have entered the final testing phase as part of the California agency's light-rail modernization project.
The transit agency last week began the "burn-in" testing stage. During this phase, the low-floor trains will simulate real-world scenarios, pulling into stations, deploying ramps, opening and closing doors, and proceeding to the next station, SacRT officials said in a news release.
Burn-in testing is expected to take two weeks to complete per train. The process is projected to continue through spring 2024 for the first 20 low-floor trains in anticipation of starting passenger service with the new trains on the Gold Line in summer 2024.
The low-floor vehicles are designed to provide easier access at each doorway and feature spacious seating and large windows for better light and views, and improved accessibility with wider aisles. The vehicles will increase overall operational flexibility by providing more access to passengers with disabilities, SacRT officials said.
