The San Antonio, Texas, City Council recently approved a plan to launch a new streetcar system in the downtown area.

Council members agreed to contribute $40 million to VIA Metropolitan Transit’s streetcar system plan, with an additional $15 million to come from private entities through the development of a special assessment district along the alignment.

The contributions are in addition to the $55 million already pledged by Bexar County and $70 million that will be provided by VIA, city officials said in a prepared statement.

The streetcar system is part of several initial projects to be carried out over the first five years of a long-range transportation plan, they said. The alignment approved by the council will travel along Broadway and terminate at the Robert Thompson Transit Station.
