San Diego MTS, DA look to combat 'wildcatting'

The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) and the San Diego County District Attorney's office are warning the public to watch out for so-called "wildcatters" — unregulated and unpermitted ride-sharing services that can be aggressive when trying to secure rides — at MTS transit centers at the San Ysidro and Otay Mesa ports of entry.

Wildcatting is an increasing problem in the area. Transit agency, the DA's office and other government partners have launched an educational campaign and installed an increased law enforcement presence in the areas around the transit centers. Authorities advise travelers and commuters to choose safe, legal transportation options, such as MTS bus or trolley service, according to an MTS press release.

Wildcatters often harass taxicab drivers, vandalize public property and don’t undergo safety screenings, MTS officials said. Unregulated transportation services may not carry enough insurance to protect passengers in the case of an accident. Additionally, wildcatters often do not undergo criminal background checks, receive safety training or perform vehicle safety inspections, MTS officials said.

“Accepting rides from unpermitted drivers who operate illegally and are not vetted can put people at risk of becoming the victim of crimes like recruitment for human trafficking, fraud and overcharging,” said San Diego County DA Summer Stephan.
