San Diego MTS authorizes trolley purchase option

The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System’s (MTS) board has authorized the agency to exercise an option to purchase seven low-floor trolleys from Siemens Industry Inc.
The total cost for the light-rail vehicles is $26.9 million, MTS officials said in a prepared statement. The option is in addition to 57 cars already on order, which MTS began receiving in September 2011. Upon delivery of all cars in 2014, each train will operate with at least two low-floor cars.
MTS plans to retire its fleet of U-2 high-floor trolley cars that the agency began purchasing in 1980. Eleven of the U-2 cars have been sold to the Mendoza Provence of Argentina, MTS officials said. Negotiations are under way for the sale of the remaining 60 vehicles.
