The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System's (SDMTS) board recently approved $125 million for the agency's fiscal-year 2022 capital improvement program (CIP).

The CIP includes:

  • $28.5 million for new low-floor trolleys;
  • $12.1 million for design and station infrastructure for Iris Rapid and overhead charging infrastructure; and
  • $3.3 million for the new PRONTO fare collection system.

“The CIP is an important road map for planning and funding assets for San Diego’s transit system. And having $125 million to allocate in CIP funds is very healthy for an agency our size," said SDMTS Chief Executive Officer Sharon Cooney in a press release. "This includes new trolleys and buses, advancing our zero-emission bus transition, fully funding our new fare collection system, and more."

Trolley lines and bus routes now have been restored to near pre-COVID 19 levels.
