The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) and affordable housing provider Affirmed Housing have begun construction on a new transit-oriented development (TOD) at the Grantville Trolley Station.

ShoreLINE will be a five-story affordable housing development that includes 124 multiple-size units available to those earning 30% to 60% of the area's median income. ShoreLINE will also feature parking, bike storage, office space, a community room and a 5,800-square-foot courtyard. The space is designed to encourage pedestrian and bike activity.

“This kind of transit-oriented affordable housing is exactly what we need more of here,” said San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria in a press release. “When people live near convenient and reliable travel options like transit, there is less overall travel by car in the city, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions and enhances quality of life for all of us.”

ShoreLINE is one of several MTS projects to redevelop park-and-ride locations into TODs. Six other projects, totaling up to 1,880 units, are in the works.
