The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (SDMTS) last week received $60 million in state funding under the California Transit and Intercity Capital Rail Program (TIRCP), the largest state grant award in SDMTS history.

More than 80% of the grant dollars will be used to help pay for maintaining a state of good repair on the Orange Line Trolley, SDMTS officials said in a press release.

SDMTS crews will upgrade 18 miles of track and perform grade crossing safety improvements on the line, SDMTS officials said.

The TIRCP funds capital improvements that help modernize intercity rail, bus and ferry transit systems. The agency's grant is part of $690 million the state recently allocated to transit agencies.
