San Diego agency sets another ridership record despite fewer trolley trips

In fiscal-year 2009, San Diego’s Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) recorded a record 91.6 million bus and trolley trips, up 1.8 percent compared with FY2008 trips. The fiscal year, which ended June 30, marked the second-straight annual ridership record for the agency.

Trolley ridership declined 1.8 percent to 39.9 million trips while bus ridership rose 4.4 percent to 52.4 million trips. However, trolley ridership figures might be skewed lower because of an estimating program that’s based on one-way tickets sold, MTS officials said in a prepared statement.

MTS operates a 54.3-mile light-rail system and provides bus and paratransit services.
