The San Francisco Bay Area's Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) recently approved Transportation 2035, the region's long-term transportation plan.
The plan anticipates $218 billion in total revenue during the next 25 years to complete transit and road projects. Major transit projects included in the program are: a Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) extension from Fremont to San Jose/Santa Clara; electrification of the Caltrain system; implementation of the SMART rail system in Marin and Sonoma counties; service enhancements along the Amtrak Capitol Corridor; and a rail extension from the Pittsburg/Bay Point BART station to eastern Contra Costa County.
Plan approval was postponed for one month as the MTC reevaluated the plan in light of the economic downturn and its impact on local and state sales tax, and the 25-year transit operating and capital projections.
