Yesterday, the Transbay Joint Powers Authority (TJPA) board reviewed the final design report for the new Transbay transit center and park in San Francisco.
With design now completed, the authority expects construction to begin in August. The design includes a glass-and-steel structure that will serve 12 transit systems, including Caltrain and the future California high-speed rail. The 5.4-acre rooftop park will feature an outdoor amphitheater, space for evening film screenings, cafes and restaurants.
The transit center also is designed to meet the LEED Gold level "green" building standards for 2009.
The budget for the first phase of the project is set at $1.6 billion. TJPA will begin demolishing the existing terminal in August. The new terminal is scheduled to open in 2017.
