The San Mateo County Transportation Authority recently approved funds to begin preliminary engineering and environmental studies to reconstruct the Dumbarton Rail Corridor.

Scheduled to be completed in 2010, the 20.5-mile corridor will run from Redwood City across the bay to Union City, and connect Caltrain, Altamont Commuter Express, Amtrak Capital Corridor and Bay Area Rapid Transit service. The project includes completing track improvements, constructing a moveable rail bridge, building five stations and installing a traffic-control system.

The authority plans to operate three round-trip trains between Union City and San Francisco, and three between Union City and San Jose.

The $5.7 million study will be funded by transportation authorities in San Mateo, Alameda and Santa Clara counties. In addition, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission will contribute $2.8 million of Regional Measure 2 funds for the project, which was included in the 2004 voter-approved ballot measure to increase Bay Area bridge tolls.
