Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority's (VTA) board recently elected Sergio Lopez as chair. He assumed office on Nov. 13.
Lopez succeeds Cindy Chavez, whose term as a Santa Clara County, California, supervisor ends this year. Previously, Lopez spent a year as vice chair of the board, working closely with Chavez, VTA officials said in a press release.
As chair, Lopez said he will focus on increasing accountability and transparency at the board level and the reliability of the all transit systems.
“With the World Cup, the Superbowl and more coming [to the region] in 2026, we’re going to work hard this year to make sure our system gets our residents where they need to go," he said in a press release.
He will hold the position of chair until December 2025, when he will be eligible for reelection. Lopez is also the youngest chair in the board’s history, and said his personal experience growing up using VTA transit service shaped his decision to enter the public service sector.
The board elected San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan as VTA's vice chair.
