Santa Clara VTA introduces Commuter Express light-rail service

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) announced that as part of its October service changes, it will make improvements to light-rail service. Beginning Oct. 4, VTA plans to operate a new weekday, peak-hour express light-rail service between the Santa Teresa and Baypointe light-rail stations, agency officials said in a prepared statement.
The VTA Commuter Express is expected to provide faster and more frequent light-rail service by adding six new trips to the current schedule.
Commuter Express trains can travel at speeds up to 45 mph as they pass through stations without stopping. The Commuter Express is a first step in delivering operational improvements identified in the Light Rail System Analysis adopted by VTA’s board in May. The two-year study provides the first-ever comprehensive evaluation of the system’s effectiveness in meeting present and future market needs, VTA officials said.
