Santa Clara VTA pre-selects Elecnor for double-track project

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) has pre-selected Madrid-based Elecnor as the contractor to double-track the Mountain View single-track segment.

The project forms part of the VTA's action plan to improve rail service on the southern section of the San Francisco peninsula over the next two years, with an initial total $60 million on a number of tenders. Elecnor, which hopes to work on all portions of the project, now is finalizing a bid of $25 million for the first project, Elecnor officials said in a press release.

The construction will focus on widening about 550 yards of track to be used as a siding, enabling VTA to operate with fewer stops.

The VTA's pre-selection has helped boost Elecnor's international presence in the rail infrastructure sector, and positioned the company to pursue other California opportunities, such as the Caltrain electrification project or the state's high-speed rail project, company officials said.

Elecnor has 20 years of experience working on turnkey projects featuring electrification, signaling, interlocking, communication and control systems projects for railways, underground systems, trams and trolley buses.
