Testing of the system, which powers trains, crossing gates and traffic signals, marks a key milestone on the path toward opening the line in spring 2016, Santa Monica city officials said in a press release.

"This train heralds a new age of mobility for residents and visitors alike, bringing benefits many of us have worked decades to achieve,” said Santa Monica Mayor Kevin McKeown.

Last week's testing occurred along the rail corridor between the 17th Street Station and the Downtown Santa Monica Station.

Operated by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the 6.6-mile Expo Line runs parallel to the Interstate 10 Freeway from Santa Monica to Culver City, Calif., and includes seven news stations and 540 parking spaces.
