The Saratoga & North Creek Railway (SNC) registered 5,393 passenger boardings in August, up 54 percent compared with 3,509 boardings in August 2011.
An Iowa Pacific Holdings L.L.C. subsidiary, SNC operates on a 30-mile line between North Creek and Newcomb, N.Y. SNC is the first privately operated, for-profit and regularly scheduled intercity passenger-rail service in the United States in more than 40 years, according to Iowa Pacific Holdings.
"Since we started in late July last year, August was really the first month where we could do a 'year-to-year' comparison," said Jack Dapkus, vice president of passenger sales and marketing for SNC and Iowa Pacific Holdings, in a prepared statement.
The higher number of passenger boardings in August are indicative of the "enthusiastic response" to SNC's onboard service, the scenery along the route, and the activities, shops and restaurants in the towns served by the railroad, he said.
