Shanghai Metro Operation Co. recently placed a $78 million order for 60 metro cars — 10 six-car trainsets — with Changchun Bombardier Railway Vehicles Co. Ltd. (CBRC), a joint venture comprising Bombardier Transportation and Changchun Car Co.

The trains, which will be used for Shanghai Metro Line 1, will be built at CBRC’s Changchun plant in Northeast China. Bombardier will design and manufacture the bogies at its Derby, U.K., facility; CBRC also will complete bogie design and manufacturing work in China. Bombardier's Vasteras, Sweden, plant will supply the propulsion equipment.

The high-capacity metro trains will incorporate advanced designs, including a modular aluminum carbody, state-of-the-art Mitrac propulsion and high-performance bogies, according to a prepared statement.

The trainsets are scheduled to be delivered between June 2004 and May 2005, with revenue service scheduled to commence in 2004.

As consortium leader for rolling stock, Bombardier Transportation already has delivered metro systems for Shanghai Line 1 (96 cars) and Line 2 (222 cars), Guangzhou Line 1 (126 cars) and Hong Kong Airport Express Line (184 cars).
