SmartCard usage is another step toward Port Authority of New York and New Jersey's modernization efforts

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has reported that sales of SmartCards on Port Authority Trans Hudson (PATH) trains now make up more than 50 percent of the market share on the rail line, agency officials said in a prepared statement.
Use of the SmartCard, which has tripled in the past two years, is part of the port authority’s efforts to make PATH one of the nation’s most modern rail systems, according to the agency. The 10-year, multi-billion-dollar modernization program also calls for replacing all 340 PATH railcars by 2011, replacing the line’s signaling system and upgrading stations.
The port authority’s $3.1 billion 2010 capital budget includes $357 million for PATH modernization projects.
