Sound Transit last week announced that construction on its 14-mile East Link light-rail extension project is more than half completed.

East Link, projected to launch as in 2023, will connect riders in downtown Seattle to Mercer Island, Bellevue and Redmond, Washington.

To date, crews have built nearly 3 miles of elevated guideway, excavated a tunnel under downtown Bellevue, built a bridge over Interstate 405, installed almost a mile of track and nearly completed a station on Mercer Island, according to a Sound Transit press release.

Other completed work includes a strengthen floating bridge, removal of the Rainier Avenue bridge in Seattle to make way for a future station, construction on the first half of a long-span bridge across Interstate 90 and pre-construction at the International District Station in Seattle.

This year, a track bridge that will enable light-rail trains to cross the Homer M. Hadley floating bridge between Mercer Island and Seattle will be constructed. Other work in 2019 will include construction of parking facilities, continued construction of a rail under-crossing, construction of a pedestrian bridge in Redmond, the laying of track and completion of an elevated guideway.
