Sound Transit and Port of Seattle recently announced an agreement to establish a Central Link light-rail station at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.



The agreement is another critical step in creating an airport station, which has been under review for several years, according to a prepared statement. Scheduled to open in 2009, Central Link would provide a light-rail connection between the airport and downtown Seattle.



The port and Sound Transit share a vision for the light-rail station, which would be located next to the airport’s existing terminal and parking garage, officials said. The project would be integrated with the port’s plans to expand the airport.



The light-rail alignment would run down the center of the new North Airport Expressway.



The agencies expect to fine-tune plans over the next two years. In 2005, the port plans to complete design of the expressway so Sound Transit can move forward with preliminary engineering, environmental review and final design for the extension.
