On Tuesday, Sound Transit officials and project partners marked the start of heavy construction on the Sumner Parking Access Improvement project with a groundbreaking ceremony in Seattle.
When complete in 2026, the new $49 million garage will serve Sounder S Line passengers and users of Sound Transit Express services.
The 600-stall garage will feature about 500 net new parking spaces at the station. Currently, parking spots at Sumner Station are routinely full early in the morning, Sound Transit officials said in a news release.
“Given that Sumner was the first station to bounce back to 100% capacity after the pandemic, we know what a priority this project is for the community, said Sound Transit Interim CEO Goran Sparrman. "Giving people more access to regional transit, and more options to travel, benefits us all."
Previously, Sound Transit contributed $7.5 million for pedestrian, bicycle, lighting and ADA improvements to the Sumner station area. That work was performed by the city of Sumner, Washington.
