Sound Transit board confirms initial Central Link construction

It's thumbs up for $2.1 billion Central Link light rail's initial segment. Sound Transit's board Sept. 27 voted 12-4 in favor of constructing — as early as in summer 2002 — the 14-mile segment from a Seattle-Tacoma International Airport park-and-ride lot through south Seattle to the city's downtown core.

The southern interim terminus at the South 154th Street park-and-ride would include airport shuttle service.

Sound Transit plans to have Central Link trains up and running in 2009, with the light rail service daily carrying more than 40,000 passengers by 2020.
