Sound Transit this week launched an upgraded ORCA fare payment system.

Crews will replace more than 6,000 card readers and vending machines across the region to be compatible with the new ORCA system, Sound Transit officials said in a press release. All current ORCA cards work with the new system; cardholders do not need to get a new card.

Fares will remain the same, and reduced fare programs will still be available.

Beginning this week, riders who regularly add funds to their cards via autoloading can go online to set up a new account. The new system also offers the myORCA mobile app. Additionally, the website – now myorca.com – was updated to feature real-time card loading, new payment options and multi-card management capabilities.

Later this year into 2023, ORCA plans to introduce a smartphone tap-to-pay function.
