Sound Transit officials yesterday honored the fourth anniversary of Link light-rail service, noting that the line has carried more than 30 million riders since it opened on July 18, 2009.

Link's annual ridership has increased by double digits since its opening. It averaged nearly 32,000 weekday boardings in June, up 14 percent over June 2012. On June 11, the service marked its busiest day ever, when it carried more than 38,000 riders, Sound Transit officials said in a press release.

"The continued growth in ridership means Link will be a vital part of the region long into the future," said Sound Transit Chairman Pat McCarthy.

The 15-mile line connects downtown Seattle with southeast Seattle, Tukwila and Sea-Tac International Airport. It is on track to exceed the 9.2 million annual riders forecast for 2013, officials said.

The line also is expected to meet or exceed annual ridership goals through 2016, when the University Link light-rail extension is scheduled to open and boost light-rail ridership to 25.7 million annual riders by 2018, they added.
