Sound Transit picks Federal Way site for OMF location study

Sound Transit's board has identified South 336th Street in Federal Way, Washington, as the preferred alternative site for the proposed South King County operations and maintenance facility (OMF).

The OMF is where light-rail trains will go for cleaning, storage and maintenance. In selecting the site, the board  considered input from nearby communities, Native American tribes, agencies and cities, as well as a technical study of three years' worth of data analysis.

OMF South will serve serve Sound Transit's growing light-rail fleet. To keep its entire light-rail system functioning, the agency needs to strategically locate OMFs that operate 24/7, Sound Transit officials said in a press release.

The South 336th Street location is not the final decision on the OMF South site. It, along with two alternatives, will be studied as part of the final environmental impact statement (FEIS), which is scheduled to be released in 2022. Final design, construction and testing of the OMF is slated from late 2024 to 2028. Opening is expected for 2029.

Sound Transit has an OMF in Seattle and one in Bellevue. In addition to studying potential locations for the OMF in South King County, the agency will require one in its North Corridor, officials said.
