Rail News: Passenger Rail
Later this week, Sound Transit will hold a public hearing on two proposed fare changes for Sounder commuter-rail service.
The agency plans to switch from a zone-based to a distance-based fare structure, and raise ticket prices 10 percent or 20 percent — which would mark the first fare increase since Sound Transit began operating commuter-rail service in 2000.
Under the current fare structure, passengers pay $2 for a one-zone Sounder ticket, $3 for a two-zone ticket and $4 for a three-zone ticket. If Sound Transit changed the fare structure and raised ticket prices 10 percent, passengers would pay a $2.55 base fare and an additional 5.5 cents per mile traveled. Under the 20 percent increase proposal, passengers would pay a $2.70 base fare and an additional 7.5 cents per mile traveled.
