Federal Transit Administration recently awarded Sound Transit $9.9 million to help the northwestern-Washington rail authority keep its commuter-rail-project momentum going.

Sound Transit plans to use the funds to acquire rights-of-way for station construction along the Sounder Commuter Rail system's Tacoma-to-Lakewood segment. The project includes the development of two stations in Tacoma and one in Lakewood, and construction of a park-and-ride facility, according to a prepared statement issued May 8 by U.S. Department of Transportation.

"The Tacoma-to-Lakewood commuter rail segment will allow even more people to experience the many benefits of public transportation, including a healthier economy, increased community mobility, reduced congestion, energy conservation, and protection of the environment," said FTA Administrator Jennifer Dorn in a prepared statement.
