The American Heart Association has recognized Sound Transit as a "Platinum Fit-Friendly Worksite," the agency announced yesterday.

The designation is considered the association's highest recognition for employers that make an extra effort to improve their employees' health.

"Our progressive human team recognizes that healthy people not only lead happier lives but work more productively and reduce health-care costs," said Sound Transit Deputy Chief Executive Officer Mike Harbour in a press release.

To help promote health, the agency offers programs and amenities such as lunch-time health and fitness classes, and access to a gym and locker rooms so employees can bike, walk and run to and from work. Employees regularly receive emails and newsletters on health issues, and an annual health and wellness fair provides an array of resources.
