Rail News: Passenger Rail

Sound Transit reorganizes to better serve passengers

As Sound Transit evolves from an agency with multiple expansion projects under way to one that’s zeroing in on daily service, officials are reorganizing departments to position the agency to increase its focus on passenger operations, capital projects and long-range transit planning.

Currently, operations for the agency’s different transportation modes are spread across separate departments, and Sounder commuter-rail and Regional Express bus departments each manage their own capital projects.

Comprising commuter- and light-rail systems, bus, customer service, and facilities and service planning, the new transportation services department will be devoted entirely to serving a growing number of passengers.

As part of the reorganization, Sounder and Regional Express projects will be managed in a single department. Also, real estate, contracting, diversity programs and other functions supporting capital construction projects will be consolidated into a single project delivery support services department, which will include the agency’s quality assurance and project control functions.

Sound Transit will appoint a director to oversee the transportation services department and a manager to oversee security and safety issues. Both will report to the deputy chief executive officer.

The changes will not increase the number of employees, according to a prepared statement.
