Sound Transit to mark light rail progress with rail-laying ceremony

Sound Transit plans Dec. 11 to celebrate a Tacoma Link Light Rail construction milestone by laying a section of track for the one-and-a-half-mile light-rail system.
The Tacoma Line has been under construction for several months; crews recently began laying track sections along East 25th Street. During the Dec. 11 ceremony, a machine will fit a small track section into place.
Last month, Sound Transit’s board authorized construction of the initial segment of King County’s Central Link light-rail system and expressed determination to extend the line north and south. Along with that progress, "this milestone symbolizes the ultimate goal of creating a seamless transit system for the entire Puget Sound community," said Chairman Dave Earling in a prepared statement.
Tacoma Link is designed to connect the city’s downtown area with the multi-modal transit hub at Tacoma Dome Station — and to every other regional transit mode in the area including Sound Transit’s Sounder commuter rail, ST Express regional bus, intercity passenger rail and bus service, and Pierce Transit buses. The light-rail line is scheduled to open in 2003.
