Sound Transit last week announced that civil construction on the Lynnwood Link extension had reached the 50% completion mark.
The 8.5-mile light-rail extension includes four new stations in Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace, Shoreline and Seattle. Construction on the project — which began two years ago — is expected to conclude in 2024.
Construction progress made to date includes the completion of all 188 columns and 530 of the 533 steel girders involved in the project, and the start of rail work in multiple locations. In addition, work is 80% completed on all 10 bridges and well underway on three new garages. A new five-story garage at the Lynnwood Transit Center — which is scheduled to open to the public in spring 2023 — will feature 1,670 parking stalls.
"The remarkable progress we're making is visible daily for anyone driving along Interstate-5. Considering that most of the work to date has been done during the pandemic, this milestone is a testament to the commitment of the project's workforce," said Sound Transit CEO Peter Rogoff in a press release.
A Stacy & Witbeck/Kiewit/Hoffman joint venture and Skanska Constructors L300 JV are executing the extension’s civil works. The $3.1 billion project includes up to $1.17 billion from a Federal Transit Administration full funding grant agreement.
By 2024, the Lynnwood Link project and other extensions currently under construction will more than double the length of the region’s light-rail system, Sound Transit officials said.
