On Aug. 22, Sound Transit will mark 10 years of service on the Tacoma Link light-rail line.

More than 9 million riders have used the 1.6-mile line since it opened between the Tacoma Dome Station and Theater District on Aug. 22, 2003, Sound Transit officials said in a press release.

"Tacoma Link has become an integral part of our transportation system and community fabric," said Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland, who serves on Sound Transit's board. "On an average work day, 3,600 people ride Tacoma Link to numerous designations along the six-station route."

Plans are in the works to expand the Tacoma Link. In May, Sound Transit's board selected the North Downtown Central Corridor as the alignment on which to advance an environmental review for a potential expansion.
