South Florida RTA launches funding campaign

The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) recently launched "Fund or Fail," a campaign aimed at raising state legislators' awareness of the agency's financial woes.
SFRTA, which oversees Tri-Rail commuter-rail service, currently depends on contributions from Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties to fund a significant portion of its operations. However, the counties currently are facing large revenue shortfalls can't afford to fund Tri-Rail at current levels, SFRTA said.
The authority is lobbying for the state to approve a new dedicated revenue source for the commuter-rail service. If it doesn't, SFRTA will have to slash up to 20 weekday trains from its current schedule of 50, and eliminate weekend and holiday service in early October, the authority said.
