South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) recently received a $13.6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) to help fund the agency’s Double Track Corridor Improvement Program Segment 5 project.
The project includes double-tracking, expanding stations, building 11 and replacing five bridges, and modernizing grade crossing and signal systems along 43.3 miles of the system, which links Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties.
Once the project is complete in December 2005, SFRTA will be able to provide more frequent weekday service and later evening service. Ridership is expected to triple to 28,000 daily passengers by 2015.
The USDOT now has provided $94.9 million for the project, which began in 1995.
