South Florida RTA surpasses 3 million passenger mark for first time

In 2006, the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) carried 3.2 million passengers — a 21.2 percent increase compared with 2005’s 2.6 million riders and the first time in its 17-year history the agency has surpassed the 3 million mark.

In March, SFRTA completed a multi-year double-track project along its entire 72-mile system and began operating 10 additional trains daily. Since then, ridership has increased more than 30 percent.

Agency officials anticipate another ridership boost in spring when a new double-track bridge over the New River opens. The bridge will enable SFRTA to operate up to 50 trains daily.
