Rail News: Passenger Rail
Earlier this week, Metrolink, the Orange County Transportation Authority, Amtrak, Operation Lifesaver and Union Pacific Railroad launched a rail safety education and enforcement program in Orange County — the parties’ first-ever county-wide crossing safety program.
Police officers and sheriffs from 21 county agencies will issue $300 tickets to motorists who attempt to drive around lowered crossing gates or stop on tracks. During a similar program held last week in Glendale, Calif., police issued an average of 24 tickets per hour.
Metrolink conducts about six programs annually to educate the public about crossing safety.
