St. Louis Metro advances long-range transit plan

St Louis Metro’s board recently approved a long-range plan that maps out and addresses the city’s transit needs for the next 30 years.
The “Moving Transit Forward” plan calls for several measures to be adopted within the next five years, such as restoring services cut last year to increase frequency, planning and designing the next MetroLink extension, and improving passenger amenities. Measures to be implemented in five to 10 years would include extending one light-rail route and building additional transit centers. Long-range plans — or measures to be implemented in 10 to 30 years — include constructing a second light-rail alignment and engineering a third light-rail extension.
“This is a comprehensive plan that combines the science of transit planning with community preferences, the demographics of where people live and work, and a study of how the region is evolving,” said Metro President and Chief Executive Officer Robert Baer in a prepared statement.
The East-West Gateway Council of Governments will consider the plan at its Feb. 24 meeting.
