St. Louis Metro will not receive promised state aid

St. Louis Metro has been notified that it will not receive the final $4 million payment from the $12 million emergency appropriation approved by the state of Missouri during the last legislative session.

Although new revenue from the recent passage of a transit tax will not flow to the authority until fall, Metro officials have been reviewing options that would allow the authority to maintain the current level of service and move forward with service restoration as was previously planned. The agency has no plans to delay service restoration, said Metro President and Chief Executive Officer Robert Baer.

Strategies being considered include not filling open positions other than operator, mechanic and front line supervisor vacancies critical to service restoration; continuing to keep a tight rein on non-personnel expenses; delaying capital projects and expenditures; and considering a $1.8 million loan from the St. Clair County Transit District, which was offered in 2009.
