Stadler to deliver zero-emission trains to California transportation agencies

Stadler Rail Group has signed a memorandum of understanding with the California State Transportation Agency and the California Department of Transportation for the design and delivery of four zero-emission hydrogen FLIRT trains with additional options for up to 21 more trains.

The vehicles would be deployed statewide in California as part of the state's "next big rail investment," Stadler officials said in a press release. 

Stadler previously sold a FLIRT H2 train to the San Bernardino County Transit Authority in 2019, which is expected to enter passenger service in 2024 as the first hydrogen-powered passenger train in the United States.

The Stadler FLIRT model is a single-deck, multiple-unit train designed for intercity and long-distance travel. The company has sold 2,000 units in 21 countries.

"Stadler’s goal is to help make travel in North America environmentally friendly through the vehicles and services we provide," said Stadler U.S. CEO Martin Ritter. "Only very few rail lines in the U.S. are electrified, which is why solutions like the FLIRT H2 are so important [in California.] It is great to be part of California’s move toward eco-friendly travel with another zero emission project in the state."
